The activists marched to the building of the Ministry of Health dressed up as fortune-tellers, patients and blind doctors, symbolizing the situation with HIV in Russia for the last 6 years, and chained themselves to the bars beside the Administration of the President situated opposite to the Ministry of Health. The activists shouted “HIV in Russia is treated blindly", “We’ve had enough of fortune-telling, we want treatment”, “Ministry of Health is a funeral bureau”.
During the demonstration, the activists attempted to hand over an open letter to Dmitry Medvedev, President of the Russian Federation, demanding immediate measures for solving the problems. However, the Administration of the President was closed.
The activists stated that they were forced to resort to such extreme measures because they were fed up with continuous problems with HIV treatment, diagnostics and prevention. In 2011, problems with the provision of medical services were registered again in more than 20 regions of Russia.
The activists put forward the following demands:
•Immediate provision of vital HIV tests;
•Development and implementation of mandatory HIV treatment protocols in Russia;
•Revision of HIV treatment standards.
“We have an astonishing country: the amount of money invested into treatment is increasing, and the situation is getting worse. I wonder how it is possible to work like that?" Comments Alexandra Volgina, HIV-activists, member of “Patient Control” movement, regarding stock-outs of medications and tests for HIV treatment, which have now been occurring for six years in a row.
More than 20 people took part in the event, all of them were detained.
